The magic continues into the second set with a really good China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. No matter – the playing is good and Jerry’s solos are syrupy. And there are some lyrical miscues that follow. It’s a Bob Weir song, yet he seems caught off guard when it starts, and the band plays for a long time before he starts actually singing. One hilarious moment comes at the beginning of Feel Like a Stranger, which is strangely wedged in towards the end of the first set. Fadeaway and Dupree’s Diamond Blues stand out. There’s a bunch of good songs here, but Bertha, West L.A. I listened to 2/3 of the set in the car, with either my wife or my kids talking to me, and at some point in each song, everyone just spontaneously shut up and listened to the music play – the boys were just that on point. The band is engaged today, and it shows in every song. If you’re just looking to rock out with the Grateful Dead, you’ll find no better opportunity than tonight’s first set from Charlotte.
